How much will it cost to be a driving instructor?

To learn to be a driving instructor the course costs £1,999. This includes help and advice for Part 1 and 50 hours of one-to-one in car training with a fully qualified trainer. Split into 10 hours for Part 2 and 40 hours for Part 3.

Payment can be made in installments, please call us for more information. The training course price is based on first time passes for part 1, 2 and 3. Additional fees may be required if subsequent tests and further training are needed for part two and three.

Option 1
Earn while you learn! A PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) licence can be applied for when you have passed Part 2 and completed 40 hours of training. This allows you to start working and earning as an instructor while gaining essential practical teaching experience with live students before taking your Part 3. Your trainee licence is valid for 6 months, you will need to complete an additional 20 hours of training with Start n Drive. If you take this option it is an additional cost of £800.

Option 2
Continue training without a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) licence until test ready by gaining experience helping friends and family with their lessons. Only a fully qualified instructor or trainee operating on a PDI licence can receive payment for lessons.

The following test fees are not included in the course and will require payment directly to the DVSA when you are ready to book your test.

An ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) Licence is required by the DVSA to legally operate as a fully qualified driving instructor in the UK.

Franchise

When you pass Part 3, you become a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and are entered on the Register of DVSA Approved Driving Instructors and will then receive your DVSA ADI Badge (Green Badge). You now you have the option of taking out a franchise with Start n Drive.
